On the other side of the city in hospital room 6c, Linda Webb was sitting next to Alexâs bed holding his hand. There was no doubting she still cared for him, only wanted the best for him, but goddamn it she wished the lazy sod would wake up already.
Gary Swann was stood by the window looking on watching a wife tending her sick husband. It should have been a beautiful moment but witnessing their intimacy he just felt guilt, something of a spare part, and thoroughly out of his comfort zone. The heavy bandaging over Alexâs amputation didnât help the situation, the thought of the wound was particularly uncomfortable to focus on, and because of this Gary tried hard not to look but that was futile. The doctors had chopped the poor sods arm off and he stupidly thought of a hundred reasons why an amputation would be bad and only one where it might be seen as a positive
âHey he wonât weigh as much!â Gary suddenly said with the words reaching Linda over Alexâs prone body.
Slowly she raised her head before giving him her greatest ever look of disbelief.â âReally Gary, you think that comment is usefulâ¦?â
ââ¦It came out wrong. All Iâm saying is that if he did worry about his weightâ¦I mean I didnât really knowâ¦I donât really know himâ¦I just think he probably wonât have to nowâ¦his weight you seeâ¦because heâs lost some...â The words trailed off completely as it struck him how inappropriate his statement had been, and how he didnât have the mental capacity or words to fix it because there were no positives he could find about the removed limb, so he made the wise decision to change the subject but only after inadvertently creating an armless elephant in the room. ââ¦Do you want a coffee..?â He didnât want to be there anymore.
ââ¦Yes please...â She lied.
Gary left and closed the door behind him with a foolâs relief and truly wishing heâd gone to work instead.
Linda listened to his heavy steps walk away down the corridor before speaking to her husband. It had felt wrong to talk to Alex with Gary looming over them because whatever happened between a man and wife was their business and no one elseâs. âSorry about Gary being here, weâre alone now. You wonât believe what happened to me yesterday. The boy who was there in the building when you fell came to see me and returned your wallet. He told me heâd stolen it off you and told me to tell you he was sorry. Thatâs crazy isnât it?...thereâs just no telling with some peopleâ¦but now the news is starting to report him as some kind of psycho but I believe he has a genuine innocent sideâ¦he told me to tell you he was glad you hadnât died...â
ââ¦No thanks to him!â The deep male voice said and she turned to see Gary surprisingly returned to the room and listening to her from the open door.
âI thought you were getting coffees!â Linda felt embarrassed and snapped angrily at the interruption.
